Music Programming 101: NACC Charting, Playlists, Rotation, & why New Music is So Important

Panelists:  Zach Wild (NACC), David DeKeyser (Spinitron), Amber Bintliff (WMSC) & Dan Yocom (Partisan Records)

Connect with representatives of NACC and Spinitron directly to discuss how to utilize and maximize the way you use these platforms. We’ll talk about the ins and outs of music programming, and why playing new music is so vital to your station’s existence. We’ll discuss the importance of sharing what you’re doing - posting playlists, interviews, adds! - and discuss the different ways programmers decide / tabulate what goes on to their charts and on the air.

We’ll also make sure everyone knows how to define what an add date is, the benefit of a rotation system, and the importance of playlist maintenance (and no, we’re not talking about Spotify…but they’re part of the conversation too!), as well as share info on resources - aka your Independent label and Radio Promotion family - you can utilize to make station programming easier!

STAY LOCAL! The importance Community Building + Engagement  - Hosted by FairPlay

Panelists:  Ayana Contreras (Rocky Mountain Public Radio), Allison Parssi (FairPlay/co-sign), Makenzie Creden (Tiger Bomb Promo), Tara Duvivier (The Lot Radio) + Shira Gans (Senior Executive Director, Policy + Programs - MOME)

Working at A Non-Commercial Radio station is more than choosing great records to play on air. As a Public Radio Station employee, by default…you’re a Public Servant. It’s a NonComm radio’s responsibility, to be intentional in speaking to the entirety of your community and make sure everyone’s voices are heard and represented. During this panel we discuss how this type of outreach garners new audiences, and brings new voices and ideas into any music programming ecosystem. We’ll share how to make sure your playlist, programming and staffing is balanced and diverse. We’ll also introduce the FairPlay Resource Hub, a tool created to make it easier for stations to kick start community initiatives and create opportunities to find new local partners to support and engage with.

THINKING BEYOND THE DIAL: Creating Awareness + Visibility Beyond The FM

Panelists:  Bobby Carter (NPR/Tiny Desk),  Tia Ho (KEXP), Giovanni Sotomayor (WNYU) + Saidah Blount (BRIC Arts)

Your station needs to sound GREAT on air, but we all know there’s more to the story as far as building an audience goes. We’ll talk about best practices when it comes to social media, content creation, events, and how to diversify your reach outside of the FM when sharing news and information with the world. We’ll dig deep into the best ways to share sessions and interviews, and discuss the importance of preparation and promotion to garner label and artist support. We’ll also dig into creating partnerships with local organizations for events, and being able to create archives and evergreen content for your station. Big picture, we’ll dig into what creating solid content and real life connections to your audience means to your station now, and for the future.
